Joel Place is the VP of Underwriting Operations and Compliance at Obie, where he oversees the operational side of how Obie's policies are underwritten and the compliance framework that keeps the company's products sound across 47 states and Washington, DC. His scope sits behind every Obie policy: the processes, guidelines, and regulatory rigor that determine what the company writes and how. Joel has spent more than two decades in underwriting, and he has done the job at every level of it. He started as a front-line underwriter and worked his way up through underwriting management, product development, and executive leadership, with a career split between traditional carrier underwriting and the insurtech side of the industry. That arc matters: he has personally reviewed the risks, built the guidelines, developed the products, and run the operations, which gives him a working understanding of underwriting that spans from the individual file to the entire book.
